Alki Beach, Seattle, WA At the Great Cross Sound Challenge, which started at Alki Beach in West Seattle, WA, on August 22, 2009, we had excellent weather: cool and light overcast. The race crossed Puget Sound to Bainbridge Island, headed south to Decatur Reef and returned to Alki Beach. Our boat did the course in reverse, taking over 600 photos of the other racers and still finishing with a respectable time. Details are on the Sound Rowers web site. Shaw Island, WA The Round Shaw Row on August 8, 2009 was another community-style race that started in Indian Cove by the county park on on the Island and circumnavigated the island. Many people camped overnight so as to be well rested before the race, but others took an early ferry ride and got there in plenty of time for the event. There were two Cadence pedal boats in the race, and both finished with respectable times. The weather cooperated by staying mostly overcast and cool, with moderate to light breezes. Elk River, WA The Elk River Challenge, took place near Westport, WA, on August 1, 2009. This community-style race started below the bridge and explored the byways of the sloughs at the mouth of the Elk River. This year there was a nice overcast and light breeze to keep the temperatures down while the rest of the state broiled under a heat wave. Details and photos are on the Sound Rowers web site. Port Townsend, WA The demo at the Rat Island Race, near Port Townsend, WA, on June 27, 2009 was a blast! This race starts from the beach and heads SW to Rat Island, near Fort Flagler. After rounding the island through treacherous tidal waters the race returns to Fort Worden, ending at the Marine Science pier. Details and photos from this year's race are on the Sound Rowers web site. Tacoma, WA The Commencement Bay Race on May 16, 2009 was attended by quite a variety of paddled and rowed craft. The water was mostly flat, the breeze was fairly light and the recorded times were pretty fast overall. Bellingham, WA The Lake Whatcom Race on May 2, 2009 was another excellent long (~12 mile) race. There was a bit of chop for the first half of the race as we headed into the SE wind, and the sideways blast and waves on the windward side of Reveille Island was loads of fun, but the return half was pretty warm and seemed mostly flat due to the tailwind. Two Cadence pedal boats were in attendance and their pilots both walked away with some wonderful prizes! Fairhaven, WA The Dan Harris Challenge on April 27, 2009 was an excellent longer (~9 mile) race. The water was a little choppy at the start, but the sun was out and the temperature was in the low 60's with a breeze from the SW. The breeze built up as the day progressed, creating waves of up to 3 feet in height by the #2 buoy. With the exception of the rowers who DNF'ed everyone had a great time! Everett, WA The Sound Rowers Jetty Island Race, located at Everett, WA, on April 18, 2009 was an excellent short (5 mile) race. The water was flat, but the sun was out and the temperature was in the low 60's with a light breeze. There were two Cadence pedal boats in the race, and everyone had a great time! Lake Stevens, WA The demo at the Sound Rowers North Cascades Cruise, located at Lake Stevens, WA, on April 11, 2009 was exciting! We experienced a bit of wind-driven wave activity at the start of the race in which up to 9 other boats capsized between the starting line and the first turn! This was a new race for the Sound Rowers, circumnavigating Lake Stevens, which is located near Everett, WA. Details are the Sound Rowers web site. La Conner, WA Our first scheduled demo of 2009 was at the Sound Rowers La Conner Race, February 7, 2009. Starting in picturesque La Conner, WA, the course headed south to the end of the Swinomish Channel, then due west towards Whidbey Island before rounding a buoy and returning to the start. There were two Cadence pedal boats at the event, and a new course record for pedal boats was set! Details are the Sound Rowers web site. Cadence Places 23rd in DPD! In a race marked by truly grueling conditions, with 20+ knot winds, waves up to 8 feet in height, beds of kelp, eelgrass and strong tidal currents, where out of nearly 140 boats entered only 92 finished, our Cadence pedal boat not only completed the race in 23rd place overall but the pedaler also took hundreds of photos during the race! See the results, photos and videos of the Deception Pass Dash here!
Open Water Cycling Receives Read all about it in the press release from the US Local Business Association!
Cascade Distance Race Unlike previous years it was fairly warm and calm at the Cascade Distance Race in Renton, WA. The field was somewhat smaller this year, but there was still a wide spectrum of talent present. As this was not a Sound Rowers event this year our entrant was unencumbered by a camera and photography duties, and could concentrate on racing. The difference was quite apparent as he stayed at the head of the pack to the turn buoy, and finished in second place overall (average speed 6.8 mph over 5+ miles) and shortly behind the first place finisher. The hot grilled burgers and all the fixings served afterwards were quite tasty!
Medina-Mercer Race It was a chilly, foggy morning at the start of the Mercer Island Sausage Pull Race at Medina Beach Park, Medina, WA. Even so, we had two Cadence pedal boats in the 14 mile long course. One boat went clockwise, and the other went counterclockwise around Mercer Island taking photos of the racers. The sun came out and warmed up the scene, causing everyone to pause at some point for a clothing adjustment. Topping if off, the hot grilled sausages served afterwards made this an excellent event!
Ocean Shores, WA At Paddle the Shores in Ocean Shores, WA, the action started at the park on the north end of Duck Lake. We had a great showing of our Cadence in the race, starting 15 minutes after the field and ending right in the middle of the pack. Next time we'll make sure our chain tensioner is fully tightened before the race!
Budd Inlet At the Sound Rowers Budd Inlet Race we demoed our carbon fiber Cadence and a new rudder design. The rudder, based on a NACA 0012 foil, worked extremely well in the forward direction. In the reverse direction, however, it appears to not have quite enough bite to properly do the job. It's tough to beat the original design!
Great Cross Sound Race The Sound Rowers Great Cross Sound Race had excellent weather and water conditions. Our entrant not only took over 500 photos, including some of California Sea Lions on one of the turn buoys, but finished in the middle of the pack with plenty of energy to spare!
Round Shaw Row With rain and sun threatening throughout the day of the Sound Rowers Round Shaw Row our entrants had a marvelous time pedaling the seas of the San Juan Islands. Tide rips and eddy currents made the course all the more interesting as we encountered inquisitive seals and other sea life around the island.
Bainbridge Island Marathon The weather and conditions at the Sound Rowers Bainbridge Island Marathon, a 26 mile race around the island, and the 13 mile half marathon, were nearly perfect. The winds were light, the sky was sunny and the tidal currents were in flood for the entire event. The Cadence pedal boat performed very well throughout the entire half marathon, passing by salmon farms, ferry terminals, eelgrass beds and reefs with gorgeous views of Seattle and snow covered mountains in the distance.
Manchester Race At the Sound Rowers 10.3 mile long Manchester race were two Cadence pedal boats. One boat had to return to the start just after the race began in order to tighten some loose bolts, and started again some 15+ minutes later. Even with the late start and delays caused by extensive photography shots and by going in the reverse direction around Blake Island, that boat had the penultimate finish!
Commencement Bay Race Under warm, hazy skies and on fairly flat water there were three Cadence pedal boats participating in the Sound Rowers Commencement Bay Race - a complete class! Competing for the first time in a Sound Rowers race was the proud new owner of a 2008 Cadence from the East Coast who was visiting on a business trip. A strong cyclist, he won first place in his class in this six mile race! Temperatures were in the low 90's as we drove back to Seattle with his brand new white and yellow boat beside a green and black carbon fiber Cadence, on the roof of the car.
Lake Whatcom Classic Under dark, drizzling skies but fairly flat water there were two Cadence pedal boats at the Sound Rowers Lake Whatcom Classic. This event started at Bloedel Donovan Park at the west end of the lake, and headed southeast for about 6-1/2 miles, rounding an island and returning. Temperatures were in the low 50's with a light mist as we showed off a brand new green and black carbon fiber Cadence, and a white and yellow carbon-basalt boat.
Dan Harris Challenge On this Sunday in Fairhaven, WA, with light overcast skies and mirror flat water there were three Cadence pedal boats for the Dan Harris Challenge. This event started at Bayview Park on the shores of Bellingham Bay in Fairhaven, WA, and headed southwest for about 2 miles, turning southeast at a buoy and heading southeast for another 3 miles before rounding Chuckanut island and returning. Temperatures were in the mid 50's as we showed off a brand new green and black carbon fiber Cadence with outriggers, a white and yellow carbon-basalt boat and a red and white fiberglass boat.
Lake Sammamish Race Our demo at the Sound Rowers Lake Sammamish/Pi-r2 race was rather placid, just like the lake. Sandwiched between days of cold rain and snow, we had perfect weather!
La Conner Race Our first official demo for 2008 was on February 9th at La Conner, WA for the Sound Rowers La Conner race. This event started at Rainbow Bridge located near the south end of town on the Swinomish Channel. Temperatures were in the low 40's with a light mist as we showed off a brand new green and black carbon fiber Cadence with matching outriggers. The outriggers made the moderate chop that abounded near the middle of the course no concern whatsoever, while paddlers and rowers alike struggled against the wind and current. Outriggers a Success! During our demos at the Sound Rowers Lake Samish race we had a boat with the first production set of our optional outriggers available to try out. Some photos can be found here and here. More photos are on the Options page. With outriggers in place, as one or both can be removed at the discretion of the pedaler while on the water or on land, it is possible to stand up in the boat on moderately calm water. With just one in place it is easy to sidle up to a dock for purposes of landing or boarding. The outriggers have proven to be an excellent option for folks who need extraordinary stability while out on the water.
Lake Washington Cascade Distance Race Our last official demo for 2007 was on October 27th at Lake Washington for the Cascade Distance race. This event started at south end of the lake at the Renton Boat House, located at the mouth of the Cedar River just east of the Renton Airport in Renton, WA. Braving temperatures in the upper 30's (brrr!) we showed off our outriggers as well as tested a prototype of a power leveling device. The outriggers made the moderate chop that accompanied the start of the race no concern whatsoever, while a number of competitors had to turn around and drop out. We also demonstrated removing and attaching the outriggers while under way, so you can have the best of both worlds! It was rather chilly (low 50's) and wet for the start of the Medina-Mercer race this year. With a moderate headwind stirring up the lake with 1 to 2 foot waves our Cadence boats proved their mettle in both the short and long courses. The Cadence in the short course began the race well behind the starting line, yet managed to pass nearly the entire field in the first mile, and finished 9th overall. The long course entrant took a more leisurely pace, yet finished strongly in his first long race. Congratulations to both of you! We demoed at Lake Samish on September 29th. The event started at north end of the lake at Lutherwood Park, located just south of Bellingham, WA. There were three Cadence boats in the race, and two boats were used in demos afterwards. Our new outriggers were a definite hit! On September 22-23 we were at Paddle the Shores. This event took place primarily at North Bay Park on Duck Lake in Ocean Shores, WA. On Saturday our entry in the 5+ mile race managed to take second place overall, finishing fairly close behind an OC-6, and ahead of OC-2's, double sea kayaks, etc. Perhaps next year our entrant won't have to double back during the race to retrieve a dropped water bottle! On September 15th at Budd Inlet our entrant in the Sound Rowers race managed to finish within 20 seconds of the course pedal boating record with a time 1:08:56. He also managed to shoot nearly 200 photos while doing so! The demo on August 25th at the Great Cross Sound Race at Seattle's Alki Beach Park on Puget Sound went very well. Two boats were in the race and performed quite well, launching from the beach, plowing through the shipping channels, navigating past floating weed gardens, threading their way through rocks and reefs past numerous curious seals and sea lions before returning to Alki some 7.5 miles later. The demo at the Sound Rowers Elk River Challenge near Westport, WA, on July 28th, 2007 was pretty fun. We had a carbon/basalt fiber boat available to try out. This boat is fast! Even with a 15+ minute pit stop to tighten a loose screw the boat subsequently performed well, frequently achieving speeds relative to the water in excess of 8 mph. Our demo at the Sound Rowers Rat Island Regatta, starting at the beach in Fort Worden State Park at Port Townsend, WA, on June 23rd, 2007, was awesome. Three Cadence pedal boats raced and records were broken in the men's and set in the junior men's categories. The weather and the water conditions were excellent, and the pot luck lunch following the race was superb! The Commencement Bay Race (Tacoma, WA, May 23) and the Manchester Race (Manchester, WA, June 9) demos went very well. There were two Cadence pedal boats in the race at Tacoma and no less than three at the rather rainy 10 mile long Manchester event. The outriggers and the weed cutter worked superbly well at Manchester, where we encountered several areas of floating vegetation on the water. Great exercise and fun were had by all! Photos can be found at the Sound Rowers web site photography page. Demo Day - May 5, 2007 Our first full demo day for 2007 was at Bloedel Donovan Park, Bellingham, WA, in conjunction with the Sound Rowers Lake Whatcom race and the W.A.K.E. Demo Day, on May 5th, 2007. We had several boats available to try out, including our new outrigger model. Both the outrigger and non-outrigger boats were well received by those "brave enough" to try pedaling! Outriggers a Success! During our third scheduled demo of 2007 at the Sound Rowers American Lake race we had a boat with a second generation prototype of our optional outriggers available. Some photos can be found here and here. More photos are on the Options page. With outriggers in place, as one or both can be removed at the discretion of the pedaler while on the water or on land, it is possible to stand up in the boat on reasonably calm water. With just one in place it easy to sidle up to a dock for purposes of landing or boarding. The outriggers should prove to be an excellent option for folks who need extraordinary stability while out on the water. Anyway, the outrigger boat was both pedaled and demoed at the race. In the race, the pedal boat records for the previous two years were beaten by several minutes! Again, the stability of the design was demonstrated as our rider stood up, rocked the boat and stayed high and dry throughout. Our first scheduled demo for 2007 was at the La Conner race, February 17, 2007. Details of the event can be found at the Sound Rowers web site. We had two boats available, including one with our prototype outriggers. The outrigger boat was pedaled in the race. With them in place, as one or both can be removed at the discretion of the pedaler while on the water, it is possible to stand up in the boat while on reasonably calm water. With just one in place it easy to sidle up to a dock for purposes of entry and egress. The outriggers should prove to be an excellent option for folks who need extraordinary stability while out on the water. Our last scheduled demo for 2006 was at Renton, WA at the Sound Rowers Cascade Distance Race. This took place on Saturday, October 28, 2006, and started at the Renton Boat House located at the southernmost tip of Lake Washington. The 5.25 or 13 mile race headed along the southwestern shores of the lake. The 5.25 mile course returned after reaching Atlantic City, while the 13 mile course headed towards the lagoon at Seward Park before returning. After the race we had a boat available to try out in the water. We also tried out a gear combination for those folks who like to pedal slower. The first demo in October was at Medina, WA at the Sound Rowers Medina-Mercer Sausage Pull. It took place on Saturday, October 7, 2006. The race started at Medina Beach Park on Lake Washington and headed south to Mercer Island. The 6 mile course returned after reaching the I-90 bridge, while the 14 mile course circumnavigated Mercer Island. After the race we had a boat available to try out in the water. Our last demo for September was at Lake Samish, WA at the Sound Rowers Lake Samish Salmon Roe. This took place on Saturday, September 30, 2006, starting at the north end of Lake Samish near Bellingham. The 5.5 mile race made more of a lassoo this year, ending in the section of the lake at the north end. There were over 100 rowing and paddling craft competing. Our photo/racing boat did very well, finishing in just over 55 minutes, even though the photo route added another 0.25 to 0.5 miles to the race. Our first demo in September was in Olympia, WA at the Sound Rowers Budd Inlet Race. The race took place on Saturday, September 16, 2006, starting at the Swantown Marina near downtown Olympia. The 8 mile course looped around the southern reach of the inlet, with lots of rowing and paddling craft for competition. After the race we had a boat available to try out in the water. Our last demo in August was in the beautiful San Juan Islands of Washington at the Sound Rowers Round Shaw Row. This took place on Saturday, August 5, 2006. The 14 mile route circumnavigates Shaw Island, hence the name. Instead of racing, however, we made it a tour with stops at Orcas and San Juan Islands. We loved those fish and chips in Friday Harbor! Our last demo in July was on the Elk River near Westport, WA at the Sound Rowers Elk River race. It took place on Saturday, July 22, 2006, which was rather a warm day. The 7 mile race toured the estuary at the mouth of the Elk River, with many twists and turns on the course. After the race we had a boat available to try out in the water. It was a good place to try out our proprietary weed cutting system!
Closely following the demo in Portland, OR was our demo on Vashon Island, WA at the Sound Rowers Quartermaster Harbor race. This took place on Sunday, July 16, 2006. The 6 (or was it really 5?) mile race toured the placid waters of the harbor, which was frequented by scores of rowing shells this time of year. After the race our boat was available for demos and several people tried it out in the water. We entered our Cadence in the BYO Boat race on Thursday, July 13, 2006. This 3 mile race took place on the Willamette River in Portland, OR, starting near OMSI. A small, relatively informal event where anyone could come on down with their boat and race, our entrant had a lot of fun in spite of the warm conditions encountered. After the race the Cadence was demoed by several of the racers. We displayed our boats at the Tacoma Freedom Fair on Tuesday, July 4, 2006. This festival (not a race!) took place on the shores of Commencement Bay in Tacoma, WA. We had a booth in the food vendor area where thousands of people had a chance to see our boats. Afterwards we were rewarded by having nearly ring-side seats for the fireworks display! Our sixth official demo was at the Rat Island race located at Fort Worden State Park in Washington. We had perfect weather and water conditions, and the pot luck luncheon accompanied by grilled salmon and sausages afterwards was pure bliss. Our fifth official demo was at the Manchester race located at Manchester State Park. In addition to placing 6th overall in the race, people from as far away as Georgia came down to see and try out our boat. Our fourth official demo was on the shores of Commencement Bay at another Sound Rowers race. Braving sunny skies and a moderate breeze our boat managed to finish in nearly record time - even though our pilot was wearing water shoes and not the clip-in style! Our third official demo was at the American Lake Classic race on April 22, 2006, in Lakewood, WA. In spite of winds and waves that kept many competitors off the course our boat went on through all three laps around Silcox Island to the finish! Our second official demo of the year was at the Sound Rowers race of the year in Issaquah, WA, on Saturday, March 11, 2006. This race started at Lake Sammamish State Park, close to I-90 and Seattle. People saw one of our boat in action as it competed with paddled and rowed vessels on the lake! It was piloted by a person in a Cadence for the first time who also worked as a race photographer. Even so, the boat proved to be a capable performer! Go to the Sound Rowers web site for more information. New Propeller for 2006! In keeping with our tradition of product improvement we are now equipping all of our new boats with the higher performance marine grade manganese-bronze propellers. These propellers have proven themselves to be at least as strong and are definitely much easier to repair if damaged than the original zinc-aluminum alloy. SALES FLASH!!
On Saturday, October 29 at Renton Boat House in the city of Renton, WA on the southernmost shore of Lake Washington we demoed our Cadence at the last Sound Rowers race of 2005! Besides setting a new course record for pedal boats on the 13 mile route we gave demos to all comers and even towed in the safety boat after its engine failed! We had two boats at Medina Beach Park in the town of Medina, WA on the shores of Lake Washington on Saturday, October 8 at the Sound Rowers Medina-Mercer race! Both boats took the long 14 mile course, setting a new pedal boating record! We were at Lake Samish, WA (near Bellingham) on Saturday, October 1 for another great Sound Rowers race! Even though the boat had a minor mishap just prior to the race which delayed its start about 5 minutes, our Cadence still managed to pass by loads of racers and finish the last leg at a speed of over 8 mph! This even included multiple stops and a somewhat longer route for better photography! On Saturday, September 17 we were at Budd Inlet, near Olympia, WA at the Sound Rowers Budd Inlet race. We had two Cadence pedal boats in the event, finishing within a boat length of each other even though one of them went an additional quarter of a mile to get around an area of shallow water near the finish. Total distance traveled: 8 miles. On Saturday, September 10 we were on Bainbridge Island, WA at the Bainbridge Island Marathon. After one of our pedalers crossed Puget Sound (5 miles) he then went on to pedal another 13 miles along the island before turning back to Seattle - for a total of over 23 miles. On Saturday, August 27 we demoed our Cadence in Anacortes, WA at the San Juan Challenge race. It was a gorgeous day, and it was great fun pedaling around the harbor. One person took it around Saddlebag Island and then headed west through Guemes Channel past the ferry and back for an overall distance of 14 miles. One of our Cadence pedal boats was on a road trip from Washington State to the Midwest. Starting on July 9, it reached central Wisconsin on July 19, headed to Door County, WI July 26, and returned to Washington on August 5. The route was more or less along the I-80 and I-90 corridors. A number of demos were given, and thousands of people saw the Cadence! On June 3rd through 11th Open Water Cycling displayed the Cadence en route to and in Southern California. If you lived on the US West Coast and wanted to see a Cadence up close and personal, that was the time! We made stops Friday morning, June 3rd at the CSUS Aquatic Center near Folsom, CA; Saturday afternoon in Long Beach, CA; and Sunday afternoon at Balboa Island. On Monday we made our way down to San Diego's Mission Bay. On the morning of Saturday, June 11th we were at Alameda Bay. On Sunday, June 12th we were at Waldport, OR.
On May 21-22, 2005, Open Water Cycling displayed and demoed the Cadence at the First Annual Puget Sound Sea Kayak Symposium. Taking place at Point Defiant Park in Tacoma, WA, this event was an excellent place to try out the Cadence! Clinics and presentations were offered that covered everything from kayaking safety concerns and individual skills to sea kayaking destinations, both here in the Northwest and around the world. On-water classes expanded the knowledge and skills of individual paddlers and provided a solid foundation for their kayaking future. In the Fun Race on Sunday, Team Pedalcraft competed against a pair of surf skis and a number of various types of sea kayaks. Even though our Le Mans start entry started from the furthest position at the start Team Pedalcraft quickly caught and passed all but the surf skis within the first minute of the race. We caught up to the second surf ski in 3 minutes, staying with them until the turn back to the finish. At this point it began to rain heavily and a strong wind came up. Team Pedalcraft poured on the power, passing both surf skis and lead the field to the finish! Way to go! On Saturday, May 14, 2005, Open Water Cycling displayed and racing the Cadence at the Sound Rowers Commencement Bay Race. This race started on the Tacoma harbor waterfront, at Headshaw Park, and headed east towards the container docks before returning to the park. Two Cadence pedal boats were in the race, and both finished the 6.3 mile course in less than an hour! On Saturday, April 23, 2005, Open Water Cycling exhibited and raced the Cadence at the 7 mile long Sound Rowers American Lake Classic. The race started at Bill's Boat House, on the east shore of American Lake just south of Tacoma, WA, circling the island in the middle of the lake three times before finishing in front of the boat house docks. Two Cadences were in the race, both finishing in about an hour! On Saturday, April 2, 2005, Open Water Cycling displayed and raced the Cadence at the Sound Rowers Lake Whatcom Classic. The race started at Bloedel Donovan Park's boat launch area, on the east side of Bellingham, WA. It headed southeast to Reveille Island. Once there the course circled the island before turning back. Unfortunately, due to the weather and water conditions demos were not held after the race. On Saturday, February 19, 2005, Open Water Cycling was displaying and racing the Cadence at the Sound Rowers La Conner Race. This race starts below the Rainbow Bridge near downtown La Conner, WA, and heads south and west towards Deception Pass before turning back. Demos were held after the race. On Saturday, February 5, 2005, Pedalcraft and Open Water Cycling were exhibiting the Cadence at Row Expo in Bellingham, WA. We had our display beside a variety of unique rowing vessels, a boat swap and boat demos along the waterfront. For more information, see Wayland Marine's web site, call or e-mail Ron Mueller at 360-738-8059. ***NEW PROPELLER AVAILABLE*** In addition to the standard zinc-aluminum alloy propeller that has served us so well over the years we now offer a manganese-bronze version. This premium propeller has a classic marine brass colored appearance and is stronger in handling collisions with underwater obstructions. Take a look at both propellers on our Options page! On March 5th through 7th, 2004, Open Water Cycling, Inc., was at Seattle's Cascade Bicycle Club's Bike Expo! We had our Cadence on display, and had a multimedia display showing our boats in action. In addition, there was a presentation at 5:30 PM on Saturday, March 6th, covering how to go pedal boating. This presentation included the do's and don'ts and what to expect when cycling on the water. It was well received by all who attended. Demo News People who are interested in getting a demonstration of the Cadence in the Seattle area may now call our Bellevue branch office. The telephone number is (425) 765-3976. Open Water Cycling, Inc., announces that Pedalcraft, Inc. is now the exclusive West Coast distributor of the "Ferrari of Pedalboats", the Cadence!! Rusty Lane, president of Pedalcraft, the largest distributor and dealer of performance pedal boats on the US West Coast, says, "The Cadence is a perfect fit for people who like the kayak concept, but prefer to use their strong leg muscles. I see a great future for the highly acclaimed Cadence, especially in the Pacific Northwest". Pedalcraft will be having demonstrations of the Cadence at a number of locations on the West Coast, in addition to providing rentals at Pedalcraft rental centers. In addition, starting in early 2003 Pedalcraft has been sponsoring Team Pedalcraft, promoting pedal powered watercraft and OWC's Cadence at human powered boat racing events in the western US. Contact Pedalcraft (www.pedalcraft.com) for more information. ***RACING NEWS FLASHES*** Open Water Cycling was at the Long Beach, CA, Halloween Hydrofest on Saturday, October 30, 2004. This exciting event took place at the Long Beach Marine Stadium. We had our Cadence on hand for demonstrations throughout the event. Dozens of people tried it out, and some even tried their hand at racing it through the 100 meter traps. All were in agreement - the Cadence is one nice boat! For more information about Hydrofest contact Bill Gaines (626) 812-2199, or via e-mail at william.gaines@ngc.com or gainesw@aol.com. On Saturday, October 30, at Lake Washington, WA near Renton, Team Pedalcraft was on hand for the nearly 13 mile long Sound Rowers Cascade Distance Race. Battling a chilly wind, milfoil and taking photos all the while our team set a course record! Congratulations! On Saturday, October 9, at Lake Washington, WA (near Seattle), our Cadence pedaled by Michael lampi was in the 6.2 mile long Sound Rowers Medina-Mercer Sausage Pull race. Barreling through rough waters and headwinds our Cadence came from behind and passed all the paddled boats and all but three of the rowed boats to the I-90 bridge halfway point. He continued to maintain the lead, letting only two boats pass on the much easier return leg, and finished in 5th place overall out of a field of 37 boats. He also managed to take over 90 photos of other racers en route! Way to go, Michael! On Saturday, October 2, at Lake Samish, WA (near Bellingham), our Cadence was present for the 6 mile long Sound Rowers Lake Samish Salmon Roe race. We had our latest Cadence model in the race and on display and available for demos after the race. The pedal boat record for the 7 nautical mile long Sound Rowers Budd Inlet race was demolished! On Saturday, September 25, Team Pedalcraft cut over 3 minutes off the old record - all while taking photos of the event, and not using special bike shoes or pedals! Demonstrations of our Cadence after the race were enjoyed by one and all. On Saturday September 11, Team Pedalcraft was at Bainbridge Island, WA, for the Sound Rowers Bainbridge Island Marathon. This 26 mile race circumnavigates Bainbridge Island in Puget Sound, due west from Seattle, WA. We had our latest Cadence model in the race and on display and available for demos after the race. A pedal boating record was set for the half marathon under quite difficult conditions of winds and waves! On Saturday and Sunday, August 28 and 29, Team Pedalcraft was at Anacortes, WA, for the San Juan Challenge. This two day 42 mile race circumnavigated Cypress and Guemes Islands in some of the most beautiful waters of the Pacific Northwest. We had our latest Cadence model in the event and on display and available for demos each day after the race. On Saturday, August 7, Team Pedalcraft went around Shaw Island in the Sound Rowers Round Shaw Row race. With a course that is nearly 14 miles long, our team managed to set a new pedal boat record with a time of 2 hours and 25 minutes! Way to go! On Sunday, July 31st, Team Pedalcraft was on the Elk River, near Westport, WA, for another Sound Rowers event. This 7 mile race wound its way up and down several sloughs and channels for a truly unique race. We had our latest Cadence model in the race and on display and available for demos after the race - and set a new pedal boat record! On Saturday, May 15th, Team Pedalcraft was on the shores of Commencement Bay in Tacoma, WA, for the fifth Sound Rowers race of the season. We had our Cadence in the race and on display and available for demos after the race. Using one of our boats for only the second time, Debbie Natelson broke the Women's pedal boat record by 14 minutes! Way to go, Debbie! A previous demonstration of the high performance Cadence was at the Sound Rowers' Lake Whatcom Classic on May 1st, 2004. This 12.5 mile race started at 10:00 AM from the northwest end of Lake Whatcom on the edge of Bellingham, Washington. The race loops around Reveille Island near the southeast end of the lake and returns. Again, Michael Lampi managed to take lots of photos, traveling at an average speed of 6.5 mph throughout the entire race. He also broke the old pedal boat record. Way to go, Michael! Photos and videos are available at the Sound Rowers web site. Another demonstration of the high performance Cadence was at the Sound Rowers' American Lake Classic on April 24th, 2004. This 6.8 mile race started at 10:00 AM from Bill's Boathouse in Lakewood, Washington. This race loops around Silcox Island in the middle of the lake three times, making the maneuverability of the Cadence highly desirable. Again, Michael Lampi managed to take lots of photos, traveling at an average speed of 6.8 mph throughout the entire race. Afterwards, in a short sprint with some of the other racers, he reached 10 mph for at least 100 yards - a personal best! Way to go, Michael! Photos and videos of our Cadence in action can be at the Sound Rowers site! Previously, the high performance Cadence was at the Sound Rowers' Lake Sammamish Race on March 21, 2004. This 6 mile race started at 10:00 AM from Lake Sammamish State Park near Issaquah, Washington. This race loops around the southeastern end of the lake twice, making the maneuverability of the Cadence highly desirable. Even with a severely bruised leg Michael Lampi still managed to take lots of photos, though he was slightly slower than his previous Cadence pedal boat record for the course. Way to go, Michael! Our last Year 2003 demonstration of the high performance Cadence was at the Sound Rowers' Cascade Distance Race on October 25, 2003. This 5.25 or 13 mile race started at 10:00 AM from the Cedar River Boathouse located on the southern end of Lake Washington in Renton. It headed along the western shore up to near the Atlantic City Boat Launch (short course) or all the way to the southwest side of Seward Park in Andrews Bay (long course) before returning. Despite a late start, uncooperative winds and heavy chop, Michael Lampi managed to break the previous pedal boat short course record by 3 minutes and finishing in 9th place overall. If you credit him the 5 minutes spent assisting another racer in an overturned boat, then Michael would have beaten the old record (done under calm conditions) by over 8 minutes, and in 4th place overall! All this, and he still had time to take pictures during the race. Way to go, Michael! On September 27th at the Sound Rowers Budd Inlet race, Michael Lampi powered an OWC Cadence to a record breaking finish! With his 7 year old son co-piloting from the rear storage compartment the two intrepid racers encountered jellyfish, an inquisitive seal and salmon leaping from the water. On top of all that, Michael managed to take numerous photos during the 7.8 mile event, which can be found at the Sound Rowers web site! On July 20th, OWC's Cadence set a record for pedal boats in the 5.3 mile Quartermaster Harbor Regatta race. In a field of 40 boats, Michael Lampi finished 19th with a time of 45:55. This is an excellent time, considering the field consisted of 26 rowing shells, with several double, triple, quad and 8 person vessels, plus a variety of high performance kayaks, surf skis, OC-2's, etc. Only one paddled boat finished ahead of the Cadence! On May 17th, OWC's Cadence established a record for pedal boats in the San Juan Challenge - Cypress Challenge race. Pedaling his Cadence for just over 5 hours on the 25 mile course Michael Lampi encountered weeds, tide rips, adverse currents, curious sea creatures and variable weather conditions. Completing this difficult event proved that the Cadence can be relied upon in truly real world outdoor conditions! The week before, on May 10th, OWC chalked up another Cadence victory at Commencement Bay, near downtown Tacoma, WA! Finishing ahead of all the OC-1's and between two 20 person dragon boats, a new pedal boat record was set for the 6.2 mile course: 52 minutes, 44 seconds! This corresponds to a speed of just over 7 mph! On April 19th, OWC's Cadence enabled Michael Lampi to complete the Sound Rowers 12.8 mile long Lake Whatcom Classic in record setting time, finishing the event in 1 hour 55 minutes 37 seconds, for an average speed of about 6.6 mph! Considering he was just getting over a debilitating cold that is an excellent time! The previous weekend Michael pedaled his Cadence to victory at the Sound Rowers American Lake Classic with a time of 57:20, and 17th place overall in a field of 48 boats. This appears to be a course record for pedal boats! On March 15th, an Open Water Cycling Cadence pedaled by Michael on its maiden voyage finished 23rd out of a field of nearly 70 boats in the 6 mile Sound Rowers Lake Sammamish race. Even with a gusty side wind and some wind-induced chop which caused 9 other boats to drop out of the race, he managed to achieve an average speed of almost 7 mph! This is over 14 minutes faster than the previous pedal powered record! One month earlier, OWC's Cadence, again piloted by Michael Lampi, finished the Feb. 15, 2003 Sound Rowers race near La Conner, WA. Battling not only a field of over 60 paddled and rowed boats, but also 25+ knot side winds, fierce tidal currents and waves of up to 3 feet, Michael finished the 7 mile race with an overall speed of over 5.6 mph! He also broke the old pedal boat record by over 20 minutes!! |
